The Scary Guy is an internationally recognised artist and motivational speaker whose work focuses on eliminating hate, negativity, and bullying. Since the late 1990s, he has travelled the world delivering powerful programmes to schools, communities, and organisations, helping people understand the impact of their words and actions, and offering practical tools for handling conflict and communication.

Over the years, people he has worked with have given him many titles such as Agent for Change, Urban Dalai Lama, Warrior for Peace, and Mind‑Waker, each reflecting the impact he’s had on audiences around the world.

Originally from Minnesota, he legally changed his name in 1998 and has spent more than 25 years using his voice, art, and lived experience to inspire change. His approach blends honesty, humour, and emotional education, making his message accessible to audiences of all ages.

Now based in Wigan, he continues to create artwork, deliver training, and collaborate with local creatives, bringing his global mission into the heart of the town’s growing cultural scene.

We visited The Scary Guy at his studio on Market Street on a quiet weekday afternoon. The space was calm, colourful and completely his. Art on every wall, conversation in every corner.

He talked about his work with schools, about why he chose Wigan, and about what it means to spend 25 years delivering the same message and still mean every word of it. He showed us pieces he was working on and spoke about the artists he wants to support through the studio.
